Shan Tuyet
· Snow Shan
Green
Shan Tuyet grows on trees older than the villages underneath them.
The name means mountain snow, for the white down on the buds. The plant is native to Vietnam and different from both the China bush and the Assam one that between them make almost all the world's tea. It is a third thing, and it was here first.
The leaf comes off ancient trees in the far north, tended by Hmong and Dao families who use no fertiliser because they never started. Nobody planted these. They were simply found and kept. It is honey-gold and floral, softly sweet, and a little wild.
